Peter Andre has been left saddened and outraged after reading cruel messages directed at his girlfriend Emily MacDonagh.
The couple announced they were "over the moon" to be expecting a child two weeks ago.
Since then, as well as congratulatory messages, cyber taunts have flown in across Twitter.
Negative people have been drawing attention to their 17-year age gap and Emily's medical degree, which she will now put on hold.
Friends of the 40-year-old told Now magazine: "Pete's gutted. He can't fathom how people can be vile towards Emily.
"He idolises her."
One Twitter user wrote: "You stupid, stupid girl - all that study and you graduate with a medical degree only to get knocked up by a has-been pop star.
"The fame is too tempting to pass on, eh, luv?"
Another posted: "I hope she manages to finish her studies before the inevitable break up in a few years to come."
Though Pete's hurt, Emily isn't letting the cruel tweets get her down.
The pal added: "He won't let trolls ruin their relationship.
"Emily totally understands his celeb status and lifestyle. She's actually taken it better than him - she doesn't let anything get to her."
It's not only online that the couple have faced backlash.
Stories have also appeared suggesting that Emily's family are less than happy with the news.
But friends are adamant the families have a good relationship.
The articles "just aren't true".
They explained: "Pete's just been on holiday with Emily's dad and he's been out to Zanzibar several times to help his charity.
"Pete's always had the family's support when it comes to Emily."
So what is the 23-year-old pregnant medical graduate actually planning to make of her career?
A source said: "She's taking a year out and will return next year to do her residency."
Pete's likely to be a stay-at-home dad, although "Emily loves her work, but is ready for a family."
