Ellen Page took the podium at the inaugural Human Rights Campaign “Time to THRIVE” conference to support LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) youth last Friday and gave a speech that no one expected.
“I’m here today because I am gay,” the Inception actress said, “And because…maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”
“I also do it selfishly,” she continued, “because I am tired of hiding, and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of that pain.”
Since her announcement, countless celebrities have taken to social media to send their love and support to the 26-year-old actress.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, from the hit show Modern Family, tweeted, “Love love LOVE @EllenPage & the message she sent out today! What a perfect way to end Valentines Day!”
Other celebrities like Jaime King, Anna Kendrick, Lance Bass, and many more have all tweeted at Ellen Page to say how proud they are of her speech and decision to come out on Valentine’s Day.
Actress Kate Mara tweeted, “Hey @EllenPage…Be my Valentine? #respect”
Ellen Page, both through her decision to come out and her thoughtful speech, has taken her stand to support young LGBT individuals everywhere, and Hollywood couldn’t love her more for it!
