Remember when getting your ears pierced meant sitting in the window of Claire's Accessories, clutching a teddy bear (with her very own set of studs, of course) and closing your eyes, while an enthusiastic 17-year-old trainee counted to three? Aah yes, the pride of returning home with your very own bottle of aftercare solution and those cubic zirconias in your lobes is a feeling you can't beat!
Well, you may just find yourself back in that dreaded chair this year, because ear piercings are back in a big way. From celebs to supermodels, people are punching their lugholes from top to bottom with hoops, studs and gems.
There's something very rock 'n' roll about embellishing your ears to excess, right? 2016's take is actually pretty tasteful, teaming tiny studs with fine hoops and minimal pieces. With Gwyneth Paltrow, Ruby Rose and Kylie Jenner all braving the needle, we thought it was high time we saw what all the fuss was about.
In fact, master piercer and body jewellery mogul Maria Tash has seen great success with her range of super-chic micro designs, clustered across the ear for maximum effect. Her first-of-its-kind piercing pop-up at LFW last year saw hundreds of budding piercees queuing out the door to experience her renowned 'technique'. Shudder.
Pain aside, if you're up for nailing this uber-cool, kinda bad-ass look, here's how:
Find someone really good to do it
Piercing superstar Maria Tash is based all the way across the pond in New York, but there's plenty of other great studios to choose from. Go with someone reputable, recommended, and most importantly, clean and sterile.
Choose minimal, chic-looking designs, and lots of them
... Or not. Less can be more!
Avoid anything too chunky
Change up the sizes, shapes and designs
If you want something more statement, go for a super-glam ear cuff à la Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and Emma Watson. Now there’s a girl squad we want to be part of...
Got big ears? Who cares! All the more space to fit in as many earrings as humanly possible
And if you’re blessed with little lobes, a few well-placed studs will look adorable
Teeny-tiny hoops are never a bad idea
Neither are chains
Think about unique placements…
You could even try a conch piercing - painful but pretty
AND if all of the above terrifies you, you can always just go ahead and fake the whole lot with clip-ons
So, earrings are in. How long before we’re all getting our belly buttons pierced again?
