When it comes to emphasising your eyes, the options are endless; false lash effect mascara, smokey eyeshadow, cat eyeliner... it's safe to say we're obsessed with making the most of our peepers.
Whether your eyes are brown, black, green, or blue, there is a way to make them stand out and shine in six easy steps. If you don't know what you're doing, applying make up to your eyes can easily turn into a nightmare. But it's not as hard as you may think! If you're serious about making your eyes stand out, there are a few hard and fast rules that every girl should know.
We teamed up with beauty blogger expert Rachel from Rachel's Stylish Life for a step by step on how to achieve look-at-me eyes every time.
Follow these rules to make sure your eyes stand out and shine:
- Always apply primer to your lid before adding any eye shadows
- Use a light shade and a dark shade of a colour on the lids to create dimension
- Use eyeliner at the top of your lid to extend your lash line
- Add a highlighter on the inner crease of your eyes to ensure they glow
- Always use mascara on your top and bottom lashes for a bold and beautiful finish
- Bold brows frame the face, and help bring attention to your eye
1. Apply primer to the eye lid
Primer will help your eye shadow stay on through the day. Simply apply a layer of primer to the base of your lid before you add any eye shadows.
2. Choose a palette and apply to your lid
Select a colour of your choice to highlight the colour of your eyes. If you have brown eyes, use a copper or bronze shadow to bring out their hue. For green eyes, add a light green shade with a touch of plum shadow at the crease.
For those baby blues, add gold and champagne shadows to your eyes with touches of deep blue at the crease.
First apply the colour of your choice to the base of your lid. Then apply the lightest colour to the area below your brow. Lastly, apply the darkest colour to the outer crease of your eye to ensure an amazing eye statement.
3. Use eyeliner to extend your lash line
Applying a thin layer of eyeliner to the base of the lash line not only lengthens your lashes, but it also helps make your eyes appear bigger and bolder.
4. Add a light eye pencil to the inner eye
Use a light eye pencil in a white or cream to add to the inner crease of your eye. This will allow your eye colour to stand out and shine.
5. Apply mascara
Ah - mascara. Where would we be without you? Of course this is one of the most important steps for making your eyes really wow. Longer, thicker looking lashes are vital for setting off the rest of your eye makeup. "Start at the base of your lash and wiggle the brush up for more curled lashes" beauty expert, Rachel, suggests. Don't forget to put mascara on your bottom lashes, too.
6. Shape and fill your brows
Lastly, make sure you shape and fill in your brows. This step is very important because your eyebrows frame your face and finish off the look. Don't be afraid to be bold! Eyebrows are a girl's best friend.
