Let me ask you this: how many times have you looked in the mirror and wished you could change something? Guilty? I'll be the first to admit that I sure am super guilty, and it's a rotten habit that I need to stahp now. Inspirational vlogger Marimar Quiroa on the other hand, has used the practice of looking in the mirror each morning positively to empower and make her feel good about herself, and we need to take note right away.
Marimar's condition, which was caused by a fluid-filled sac caused by blockages in the lymphatic system, has sadly left her unable to speak and having to eat out of a tube in her stomach. Currently a Zumba instructor, to communicate she uses sign language, and wants to become a teacher to deaf children to help others going through a similar experience.
She signs: "When I was young I'd talk to myself in the mirror, I'd tell myself I was beautiful ... I'd encourage myself and list things that were good about me. That's how I learned to accept myself for who I am." Watch her redefine societal beauty ideals in this uplifting film for Barcroft TV:
Her beauty vlogs (@MakeupArtistGorda66) are taking Youtube by storm, with her videos racking up an impressive eight million views - and for good reason, she is a pro at contouring and can perfect that winged eyeliner better than I could ever dream of.
In the film, she leaves us with the following mantra that we could all learn a thing or two from: "To me, beauty means to accept yourself for who you are, and to ignore what other people tell you. You show your beauty how it is, it doesn't matter if you have a different looking face, accept yourself for who you are." We couldn't agree more.
Now there's a lady that talks sense. Let's call time on worrying about the things we would change, and let us instead all take a leaf of gorgeous Marimar's book and be thankful for the skin we're in.
